The tenement building at 538 East 14th Street is the scene of an early-morning blaze this East Village Sunday (the second on this block recently). Residents evacuated to 14th Street as shouts of “fire!” broke up the quiet morning hour. Lots of smoke but no visible flames pouring out of Otto’s Shrunken Head, the building’s longtime street-level tiki bar. Big emergency...
BREAKING: Electrical wires have started a manhole fire on Clinton and DeGraw in Cobble Hill. Only a small amount of smoke is coming from the manhole, but firefighters have completely blocked off the intersection.

Causes Revealed in Two EVill Rooftop Fires
The FDNY has determined the causes of the two recent rooftop fires in the East Village and Noho. The massive fire on Houston and Avenue A last week was due to unapproved electrical wiring. Residents had extended cords to the roof and stretched wires beneath roofing materials. And the rooftop fire above Urban Outfitters on Broadway was caused by a smoker. Tsk tsk. [NY1]
Two Alarm Fire on Upper East Side
A two alarm fire broke out on the Upper East Side in the wee hours of the morning, leading to the minor injuries of three firefighters and two civilians, DNA Info reports. The fire erupted at 1:30 AM today at 530 Park Avenue at 61st—where apartments average $1.5 million—and was contained within an hour. [DNA Info]
Another witness reports that the Broadway blaze “can no longer be seen from New Jersey.” Meanwhile, an insensitive Twitterer/fashion critic writes, “The roof the roof the roof is on fire Urban Outfitters We don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn Burn motherfucker burn.”
Further reports on today’s fire from the Fireblog Tipline: “If you haven’t already heard, the Urban Outfitters near Broadway and Houston is apparently on fire.”

Reports are trickling into Fireblog HQ about another rooftop blaze, this one at 628 Broadway, a six-story loft building between Houston Street and Bleecker Street. Notify NYC is calling this a TWO ALARM fire for now, which is approximately ONE ALARM less than last week’s sensational East Village fire on Houston Street. This one...
NY1 reports “about 188 firefighters from 33 units are putting out the flames.” No wonder this blaze FLAMED OUT so quickly.

Albert Trummer, the owner/bartender at sleek and pricey Chinatown bar Apotheke was arrested by fire marshals for pouring alcohol along the bar top and setting it aflame. The FDNY received an anonymous tip about Trummer’s signature move months ago and have been performing sting operations ever since. On Saturday night at 2 AM, they caught him in the act. [NYT]
Firefighters saved 30 animals from a pet store fire in Queens yesterday, according to the NYDN. Because the Astoria shop was closed for Memorial Day, the firemen had to cut their way through the security gates. Sadly, while they were able to rescue many cats and dogs, they couldn’t help the birds, which are particularly vulnerable to smoke inhalation.

The Bed Stuy blog reports that a fire last week that took out the top floor of 307 Stuyvesant Avenue at Halsey Street is delaying the opening of Butternut Market. The space suffered water and smoke damage, but owners are happy that no one was hurt. They should open sometime this summer. [BSB]
From the “Things That Were on Fire” FireBlog files: A peek behind the metal shutters of one of the storefronts scorched by the THREE ALARM blaze on 14th Street and Avenue A last week. The tattered Stuyvesant Convenience awning is there, but the ceiling is not. Flamestink still registers high on the nostrils.
DNA Info reports that a ONE ALARM fire broke out at a historic telecom building at 60 Hudson in Tribeca. Luckily the fire did not hit the 80,000 gallons of diesel fuel that happens to be stored there. [DNA Info]
Though it hasn’t been on fire in a while, a special Fireblog shout out to the Empire State Building, which is lit yellow/white/blue to honor the Fire Department of New York. Lookin’ good, old gal!
